What is solar PV thermal analysis?
Solar PV thermal analysis is the inspection of operating photovoltaic panels using an infrared camera. Temperature distributions in radiometric images are compared with panels operating under similar conditions. The purpose is not simply to produce a colour image, but to support maintenance decisions by locating areas of unusual heating. GES is the Turkish abbreviation for a solar power plant; thermography is based on imaging infrared radiation from surfaces.
How does the inspection proceed?
First, site location, installed capacity, panel layout and access conditions are assessed. A flight plan is prepared according to site and weather conditions. Thermal images, visible-light images and available site information are interpreted together. Anomaly locations, assessment notes and inspection priorities are then reported. Survey and report delivery schedules are confirmed at the quotation stage.
Which problems does thermal surveying reveal?
Abnormal temperature distributions at cell, panel or string level may indicate shading, soiling or an electrical problem requiring investigation. A thermal image alone does not establish the root cause of every finding. When PID, microcracks or connection faults are suspected, the need for electrical measurements or complementary tests such as electroluminescence should be considered separately.
Why do measurement conditions matter?
Irradiance, wind, passing clouds, camera angle, reflections and system operating status affect thermal images. Surveying in unsuitable conditions may produce misleading results. IEC TS 62446-3 addresses outdoor infrared thermography of operating PV modules and plants; the inspection scope and methods used must be clearly stated in the quotation and report.
How is solar PV thermal analysis priced?
Installed capacity alone does not determine the price. Rooftop or ground-mounted configuration, dispersed layout, transport, flight conditions and the level of report detail affect the workload. For a comparable quote, share the location, MW or kW capacity, site plan and expected deliverables. Price and delivery time are set once the site scope is clear.
Information to prepare for a quote
- Site location and installed capacity
- Rooftop or ground-mounted configuration and panel layout
- Known production drops and previous maintenance records
- Required report detail and planned inspection period
